Summer Photoshoots: Common Styling Mistakes Photographers Should Avoid – A Stylist’s Perspective

Light fabrics that dance in the breeze bring photos to life.

Summer is one of the most popular seasons for photoshoots – golden light, lush landscapes, and flowing dresses come together to create pure magic. But as dreamy as the results can be, there are some classic styling pitfalls that can stand between a good shoot and an unforgettable one.

As a stylist working closely with photographers and clients alike, I’ve seen it all. So here’s a little guide to help you avoid the most common styling mistakes during summer sessions – and ensure your creative vision shines through without distraction.

1. Overlooking the Power of Fabric Movement

Mistake: Choosing stiff or heavy materials that don’t move well in the summer breeze.

Stylist Tip: Lightweight, breathable fabrics like chiffon, silk, or soft tulle create that dreamy flow that summer light loves. I always select dresses that "dance" with the wind – it adds natural drama and depth to any image.

Less is more – let one statement piece speak for itself.

2. Too Many Accessories (or the Wrong Ones)

Mistake: Over-accessorizing the model with bold statement pieces that draw attention away from the face or the dress.

Stylist Tip: In summer, less is more. I prefer to let one key element shine – whether it's a flower crown, a single bold necklace, or nothing at all. The goal is balance, not competition.

3. Ignoring the Setting’s Color Palette

Mistake: Styling with colors that clash with the background – for example, neon colors in a soft meadow scene or dark hues on a bright beach.

Stylist Tip: I always take into account the location’s palette before styling. Soft neutrals, pastels, and earthy tones often blend beautifully with summer landscapes. I help photographers choose dresses that elevate their natural surroundings, not fight them.

4. Wrong Footwear (or Forgetting About It)

Mistake: Choosing shoes that are either too formal or completely impractical for the terrain.

Stylist Tip: Barefoot can be beautiful (and safe) for soft grass or sand, but I also recommend delicate sandals or flats when needed. I always brief the client beforehand so they know what to expect and how to move comfortably.

5. Not Prepping for Heat & Sweat

Mistake: Forgetting how summer heat affects both skin and clothing. Shiny skin and sweat patches are harder to retouch than you’d think.

Stylist Tip: I always pack blotting papers, a small towel, water spray, and sometimes even a mini fan on set. Light layers also help – especially with young children or clients not used to being photographed.

Final Thoughts

Photographers already have a lot on their plate – light, composition, directing, posing. Styling might feel like a side concern, but it can make or break the aesthetic of the final image. That’s why I love collaborating with creatives to take this off their shoulders.

Whether you’re building your client wardrobe or planning a concept shoot, I’m here to help you get the details right – so the story you're telling is clear, cohesive, and breathtaking.
